Team from National University of “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy” wins 2017 edition of the European Human Rights Moot Court Competition

Students from the National University of “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy” (Ukraine) were declared winners of the fifth edition of the European Moot Court Competition in English on the European Convention on Human Rights, after beating a team from the Sofia University (Bulgaria) in the final round. The team from University of Cambridge (United Kingdom) placed third.

The prize of the Best Orator of the finals was awarded to Oleh Dykyi, from the National University of “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy”.

The Best Respondent Written Submission prize was given to the team from the Sofia University.

The Best Applicant Written Submission prize was awarded to the National University of “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy”.

The final round took place at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg today and its jury, made up of prominent figures, including judges of the Court and senior Council of Europe officials, was chaired by Georgios Serghides, judge at the European Court of Human Rights on behalf of Cyprus.

Twenty university teams from fifteen countries (Bulgaria, Croatia, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Romania, Russian Federation, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, Ukraine and United Kingdom) have competed in a fictive case regarding the balance between individual rights and national security. The winning team is awarded a traineeship at the Court.

The Moot Court Competition aims at giving law students, who are future lawyers or judges, practical experience on the European Convention on Human Rights and its implementation.

The competition is organised by the European Law Students Association (ELSA) with the support of the Council of Europe. ELSA is an independent and non-profit organisation representing 50 000 students, located in 300 universities in 43 European countries.

Several countries from the Council of Europe have financially contributed to the organisation of this fifth competition, in particular Cyprus, the current Chair of the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers, the United Kingdom and Turkey.
