Secretary General Jagland on official visit to the Republic of Moldova

Council of Europe Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland will make an official visit to the Republic of Moldova on 30 and 31 May.

During his visit to Chisinau, the Secretary General will launch the Council of Europe Action Plan for the Republic of Moldova 2017-2020, together with Andrei Galbur, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, and will seek to strengthen co-operation with the Moldovan authorities.

The Secretary General will hold meetings with President Igor Dodon, Prime Minister Pavel Filip, President of the Parliament Andrian Candu, and President of the Constitutional Court Tudor Panțîru.

He will also meet with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, Andrei Galbur, the Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration, Gheorge Bălan, the Minister of Justice, Vladimir Cebotari, and the Minister of Internal Affairs, Alexandru Jizdan.

On the agenda there are also meetings scheduled with members of the national delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, representatives of the civil society and extra-parliamentary parties.

The Secretary General will give a lecture at the Moldova State University on the challenges and the threats to democratic security.

The Council of Europe Action Plan for the Republic of Moldova 2017-2020 aims to bring Moldovan’s legislation, institutions and practice further into line with European standards in the areas of human rights, the rule of law and democracy.

This new Action Plan will address issues such as fighting corruption, money laundering and cybercrime; enhancing media pluralism and promoting public media; increasing the transparency and effectiveness of the public administration; and ensuring social rights.

The plan will continue to tackle issues that were addressed in the first action plan (2013-16), such as fighting human trafficking and discrimination, the reform of the electoral system, the judicial system and the prosecution service, and building confidence among communities on both banks of the river Nistru/Dniestr
