Ref. DC 039(2017) 21.03.2017 Cyprus Chairmanship Conference in Nicosia: 'Securing Democracy through Education' Education to fight violent extremism and radicalisation leading to terrorism. Education to build Inclusive Societies, valuing diversity and dialogue. Education to create a provision for refugees, from short term solutions to long term integration. These major challenges that Education systems are currently facing in Europe and elsewhere will constitute the main topics of the international conference 'Securing Democracy through Education' (programme), organised in the framework of the Cyprus Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, in Nicosia (Filoxenia Conference Centre, 22-23 March). The event will be opened by the Minister of Education and Culture of Cyprus, Costas Kadis together with Council of Europe Deputy Secretary General, Gabriella Battaini Dragoni and the European Commissioner on Education, Culture, Youth and Sport, Tibor Navracsics. Ministers of Education from State parties to the European Cultural Convention will participate along with Ministers of Education from South Mediterranean areas and policy experts representing a total of 39 countries. Press statements will be delivered by the Minister of Education and Culture of Cyprus, Costas Kadis and the Deputy Secretary General, Gabriella Battaini Dragoni on Wednesday, March 22nd at 08.50 a.m. Background Taking stock of the Brussels Declaration of Council of Europe Ministers of Education on 12 April 2016 and of the Action Plans adopted by the Committee of Ministers in 2015 and 2016, the conference will also provide Ministers with an opportunity to discuss the implementation of the Framework of Competences for Democratic Culture. From Nicosia to Prague - Czech Chairmanship event The Czech Republic has indicated that its Chairmanship (May-November 2017) will include a high level Prague Forum on educational policies of the Council of Europe focusing on the Competences for Democratic Culture Framework (26-27 October 2017).
