Preventing corruption at local and regional level: a joint conference of the Congress and the European Committee of the Regions

Strasbourg, 24 February 2017 - Local and regional representatives, academics as well as representatives of civil society and NGOs will participate in a conference on anti-corruption strategies and promotion of cooperation at the sub-national level, on 28 February 2017 in Brussels. Organized jointly by the European Committee of the Regions (CoR) and the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe, this conference will examine recent changes in the fight against corruption and the prospects for a global approach.

In particular, participants will discuss the revision of the 1999 European Code of Conduct on the political integrity of local and regional representatives, which is part of the anti-corruption roadmap adopted by the Congress in October 2016. This revision aims to integrate recent developments in local governance and to take into account new themes such as the processing of personal data and the protection of whistleblowers. It also aims to extend the scope of the Code of Conduct to all persons working for or within local and regional authorities.

The conference will discuss the role of media and civil society in tackling corruption and look at the work being done at local level in some of the countries of the Eastern Partnership. It will be opened by Markku Markkula, President of the European Committee of the Regions, and Gudrun Mosler-Törnström, President of the Congress of the Council of Europe.

This event will allow the European Committee of the Regions and the Congress to identify priorities for joint action in the prevention of corruption and the promotion of public ethics.

This conference is open to the public and the media.
