High time for states to invest in alternatives to migrant detention

Strasbourg, 31 January 2017 – “The use of migrant detention across Europe, whether for the purpose of stopping asylum seekers and other migrants entering a country or for removing them, has long been a serious human rights concern.” says Nils Muižnieks, Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, in his latest Human Rights Comment published today. “I have repeatedly spoken out against the pan-European trend of criminalisation of asylum seekers and migrants, of which detention is a key part. Detention is a far-reaching interference with migrants’ right to liberty. Experts have confirmed its very harmful effects on the mental health of migrants, especially children, who often experience detention as shocking, and even traumatising.” (continue reading)

Strasbourg, le 31 janvier 2017 – «Partout en Europe, le recours à la détention des migrants que ce soit pour empêcher les demandeurs d’asile et les autres migrants d’entrer dans un pays ou pour les renvoyer, suscite depuis longtemps de graves préoccupations en matière de droits de l’homme. », déclare Nils Muižnieks, Commissaire aux droits de l’homme du Conseil de l’Europe, en publiant aujourd’hui un nouvel article dans le carnet des droits de l’homme. « Je n’ai cessé de dénoncer cette tendance paneuropéenne à assimiler les demandeurs d’asile et les migrants à des délinquants, qui se traduit notamment par leur placement en détention. La détention est une atteinte considérable au droit des migrants à la liberté. Des experts ont confirmé ses effets néfastes sur leur santé mentale, et tout particulièrement celle des enfants qui vivent souvent la détention comme une expérience choquante, voire traumatisante. » (lire la suite)

Страсбург, 31 января 2017 – «Заключение под стражу мигрантов на территории Европейского континента, будь то с целью предотвращения прибытия в страну в поисках убежища или с целью их выдворения из страны, вызывает серьезную обеспокоенность в свете соблюдения прав человека.», отметил Нилс Муйжниекс, Комиссар Совета Европы по правам человека в опубликованном сегодня Комментарии по правам человека. «Я неоднократно высказывался против общеевропейской тенденции криминализации лиц, ищущих убежище и мигрантов, в том числе, против их содержания под стражей. Заключение под стражу мигрантов является серьезным нарушением права мигрантов на свободу. Эксперты подтвердили, что нахождение в заключении имеет пагубные последствия для психического здоровья мигрантов, особенно детей, которые часто испытывают шок и даже получают психическую травму.» (Продолжить чтение)
