Council of Europe adopts recommendation on match-fixing
28 September, Strasbourg - The Committee of Ministers has today adopted a recommendation to member states on promotion of the integrity of sport against manipulation of results, notably match-fixing.
After the adoption, the Ministers’ Deputies held an exchange of views, in the framework of the activities of the Enlarged Partial Agreement on Sport (EPAS), with UEFA President Michel Platini and the Minister of Youth and Sports of Serbia, Snežana Samardžić-Marković. The outgoing French Sports Minister, Chantal Jouanno, addressed a written statement to the Committee of Ministers.
"The Council of Europe has today taken the political lead in the fight against match-fixing. I hope the EU Institutions will follow", said Michel Platini.
He recalled moreover, that the Council of Europe had set a reference landmark in tackling hooliganism, violence, and discrimination in stadiums across Europe, with the European Convention on Spectator Violence and Misbehaviour at Sports Events and in particular at Football Matches (CETS n° 120).
"The merits of this text are numerous. However, more than a quarter of a century after its adoption, it is perhaps necessary to update it, reinvigorate it and adapt it to the demands of the 21st century" - declared Platini to the Committee of Ministers. "This is what we are committing ourselves to do today, hand in hand with the Council of Europe.”
