Ian Micallef: “Guido de Marco was an ardent supporter of the European project”

“Guido de Marco was a remarkable politician and an ardent supporter of the European project, who devoted his entire life to the cause of integration of our continent. Owing to his personal commitment, his vision and his statesmanship, his native country of Malta has taken its rightful prominent place in the united, democratic Europe,” stated Ian Micallef, acting President of the Council of Europe Congress of Local and Regional Authorities, following the death of the former President of Malta.

“Guido de Marco was convinced that democracy must be built from the bottom up, and, as President of the Republic, sought to give local authorities particular attention in keeping close to what the citizens expect from the State.

“On behalf of the Congress, I wish to express my condolences to the family of Guido de Marco and the authorities of Malta, in paying tribute to this man of renown who will be thoroughly missed,” said Ian Micallef.
