International Prize for Justice in the World awarded to the Council of Europe and its Consultative Council of European Judges

Strasbourg, 04.11.2009 – The “Justice in the World” Foundation, set up under the patronage of the International Association of Judges, has decided to award its prize for 2009 to the Council of Europe for its efforts in support of judges, referring in particular to the quality of the work undertaken by its Consultative Council of European Judges (CCJE) since 2000.

The ceremony, which took place in Madrid on 3 November, was opened by José Maria Bento Compagny, head of the “Justice in the World” Foundation and of the International Association of Judges. The Elogium was delivered by Ernst Markel, chair of the jury which was made up of senior figures from the world of international justice.

The Chair of the CCJE, Julia Laffranque (Estonia), and Philippe Boillat, Director General of Human Rights and Legal Affairs of the Council of Europe, received the prize and spoke of the importance of the Council of Europe’s and the CCJE’s efforts to develop and strengthen an independent, efficient, high-quality judicial system across Europe, as a key element in the rule of law.
