Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers meet in Istanbul
Strasbourg, 06.05.2011 - The Ministers for Foreign Affairs of the Council of Europe’s 47 member states will meet in Istanbul on Wednesday 11 May. In the framework of this meeting, Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu, Chairman of the Committee of Ministers, will also host a working dinner on Tuesday 10 May.
Before the session, the new “Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence” will be opened for signature (9.00 am, “Kaftan” room, Çırağan Palace).
Minister Davutoğlu will chair the meeting, which begins at 9.30 am on 11 May. Items on the agenda include:
· The Council of Europe: a strategy for values in action – Activity report by the Secretary General
· European Convention on Human Rights
· “Living together in 21st century Europe”– Report of the Group of Eminent Persons (*)
· Neighbourhood policy of the Council of Europe
At the end of the session Ukraine will take over the chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers from Turkey for the next six months. Minister Davutoğlu will present a report on Turkey’s achievements over the past six months and Kostyantyn Gryshchenko, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, will present the priorities of his country.
A press conference with Minister Davutoğlu, Minister Gryshchenko, and Thorbjørn Jagland, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, will be held after the session, at approximately 1 pm (“Mabeyn”, first floor, Çırağan Palace).

Accreditation: Please fill in the form available at www.byegm.gov.tr. Last minute press accreditation will also be possible upon presentation of a valid press card or of a letter of presentation from the media organisation represented, together with an ID document (“Şimal A” room, first floor Çırağan Palace). A fully equipped press room is foreseen for journalists (“Şimal A”)).
The discussions are held in camera. Nevertheless, photographers and cameramen may take photographs for a few minutes at the opening of the session at 9.30 am on 11 May (Ballroom, 2nd floor, Çırağan Palace), and at approximately 12.30 pm when Turkey hands over the chairmanship to Ukraine.
