Germany ratifies Council of Europe Cybercrime Convention
Strasbourg, 09.03.2009 – Germany today ratified the Council of Europe Convention on Cybercrime, the only legally-binding treaty existing in this field.
Since it was adopted in 2001, the Convention has been signed by 46 countries, 24 of which have also ratified it. Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Mexico and the Philippines have been invited to accede.
Germany’s ratification comes just before the opening in Strasbourg of an annual conference on cybercrime (10-11 March), focusing this year on the criminalisation of child pornography and related obligations of Internet access providers, training to combat cybercrime, and tracking criminal monetary transactions on the Internet.
More information on the conference and on the Council of Europe’s work against cybercrime can be found at www.coe.int/cybercrime and in our thematic file.
