Local diplomacy thrives through twinning between towns, according to Kaoru Kurata

28/05/2008 “In today’s world, in addition to national diplomacy which remains important, citizens’ exchanges also contribute a great deal to strengthening peace, with local communities becoming increasingly involved in local diplomacy,” stated Kaoru Kurata, Mayor of Ikeda (Japan), in the debate on City Diplomacy in the Chamber of Local Authorities. He described his town’s experience gained from its twinning with Launceston in Australia (for 43 years) and Suzhou in China, including the impact of local diplomacy on municipal development in the fields of economy, education, culture and the environment.
