A new notion of media? – First conference of European ministers responsible for media and new communication services
Date: 28-29 May 2009
Location: Reykjavik (Iceland) – Hilton Nordica Hotel
Organised by the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture of Iceland in cooperation with the Council of Europe
Description: New information services and technologies are transforming the ways media deliver information and individuals seek and use it. But do new media or media-like services such as search engines, Internet Service Providers or blogs carry similar professional responsibilities to the traditional written press and electronic media? What distinguishes media-like services? And is there a need to encourage some form of regulation for them?
The ministers responsible for media and new information services from the 47 Council of Europe member states, experts and representatives of civil society, youth and the business community will meet to assess these recent social, cultural and technological changes.
They will also discuss the direction the Council of Europe´s work should take in studying and meeting the challenges of these new developments to freedom of expression and information, and other human rights such as privacy.
