Queen Rania of Jordan and Jorge Sampaio to receive Council of Europe North-South Prize

Organised by the Council of Europe North-South Centre and the Portuguese Parliament.
Description: Rania Al-Abdullah, Queen of Jordan, and Jorge Sampaio, former President of Portugal, High Representative of the United Nations for the Alliance of Civilisations will receive the Council of Europe North-South Prize .
The Prize is awarded each year to two people, one from the North and one from the South, in recognition of work protecting human rights and strengthening North-South relations.
The President of Portugal Anibal Cavaco Silva, the President of the Portuguese Assembly Jaime Gama, Council of Europe Deputy Secretary General Maud de Boer-Buquicchio, the President of the Council’s Parliamentary Assembly Lluis Maria de Puig, and
the President of the North-South Centre, Claude Frey,
are due to take part in the ceremony.
In 2008, Simone Veil, former President of the European Parliament, and Kofi Annan, former Secretary General of the United Nations, received the Prize for their contribution to the defence and the promotion of the human rights throughout the world.
The award ceremony is open for the media.
Journalists will follow the ceremony from the specially designated seats in the Senate Room of the Portuguese Parliament.
