More action needed in Albania to combat rising trafficking, says Council of Europe Anti Trafficking body

Strasbourg, 02.12.2011 – A Council of Europe Anti-Trafficking group says Albania needs to do more to combat trafficking.

The Group of Experts on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings (GRETA) urged the Albanian authorities to step up action in its first evaluation report on the country.

Authorities must combat gender stereotypes and prejudices which make marginalised groups vulnerable to traffickers and prevent victims reintegrating, the report says, with more emphasis needed on creating education and job opportunities

GRETA welcomed the setting-up of the Office of the National Co-ordinator for the fight against trafficking and of a national referral mechanism to identify and assist victims, but urged better cooperation with destination countries on repatriation and stronger measures to protect victims, especially child victims. The authorities also needed to enforce legislation on the confiscation of proceeds from trafficking offences, and ensure that victims can exercise their right to compensation.
