ROMACT programme launches in Bulgaria and Romania
Strasbourg, 11.10.2013- A new programme aimed at improving the inclusion of Roma people in areas such as housing, education and employment will be launched in Albena, Bulgaria on Monday 14 October, and in Bucharest, Romania on Tuesday 15 October. The ROMACT programme will run for one year in Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, Italy and Slovakia, and will focus on building the capacity and political will of local and regional authorities to develop and implement strategies and policies for Roma inclusion. ROMACT is a joint initiative of the Council of Europe, the European Commission and the European Alliance of Cities and Regions for Roma Inclusion.
The Bulgaria launch event will take place at the Flamingo Hotel in Albena, and will be open to the media. Speakers include Aurel Ciobanu-Dordea, Director of the European Commission’s Directorate General for Justice, Militza Jordanova, representing the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice of Bulgaria, and Denis Huber, representing the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe.
The following Bulgarian municipalities will take part in the programme at varying levels of involvement: Byala Slatina, Maglizh, Tundja, Sliven, Varna and Shumen.
The Romania launch event will take place at the Hotel Intercontinental in Bucharest (4 Bulevardul Nicolae Bălcescu) and will also be open to the media. Speakers include Aurel Ciobanu-Dordea, Director of the European Commission’s Directorate General for Justice, Liviu Nicolae Dragnea, Vice Prime Minister of Romania and Minister of Regional Development and Public Administration, and Denis Huber, representing the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe.
Romanian municipalities taking part in the programme are: sectorul 6, Bucuresti, Buzau, Botosani, Tg.Jiu, Toflea, judetul Galati, Calarasi, Bacau, Craiova, Cumpana and Timisoara (pilot project).
Programme activities will include training, coaching and mentoring on putting commitments into practice.
