4 Human rights
4.1 United Nations –
Exchange of views (human rights questions) with experts from capitals (31 March 2011)
To hold an exchange of views on the United Nations (human rights questions), with the participation of experts from capitals on the basis of the draft agenda set out below.
In a letter for the attention of all Permanent Representatives or Chargés d'Affaires of member states and states enjoying observer status (Canada, Holy See, Japan, Mexico and the United States of America), dated 28 February 2011, the Chairman recalled that, at the 1106th meeting of the Ministers' Deputies, (16 February 2011, item 4.4), it was agreed to hold, in the morning of Thursday 31 March 2011(10.00 am - 1.00 pm), an exchange of views on the United Nations (human rights questions), with the participation of experts from capitals.
The following agenda was agreed for the exchange of views:
a. General discussion on the developments and main results of the 65th session of the United Nations General Assembly;
b. Overview of co-operation between the Council of Europe and the United Nations in the human rights field in 2010;
c. Major themes for the Human Rights Council in 2011.
It is recalled that in the afternoon there will be an informal meeting following the session of the UN Human Rights Council (Geneva, 28 February - 15 March 2011) and to prepare the next session of the UN Human Rights Council (Geneva, 30 May - 17 June 2011). This meeting is scheduled to take place at 3 p.m. in Room 6 of the Palais de l’Europe. Among the themes which could be discussed at this informal meeting, the Secretariat has suggested the following:
Follow-up to the 65th Session of the UN General Assembly and preparation of the next sessions of the UN Human Rights Council. In particular:
a) Children’s rights,
b) Violence against women,
c) Freedom of Expression,
d) Universal Periodic Review,
e) Follow-up to the discussion at the morning’s meeting.
