Republic of Moldova: Jean-Claude Mignon welcomes the election of the new President and announces a visit to the country

Strasbourg, 16.03.2012 – The President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), Jean-Claude Mignon, has welcomed the election, in a vote in parliament this morning, of the new President of the Republic of Moldova.

“I would like to congratulate Nicolae Timofti wholeheartedly on his election as President of the Republic of Moldova. It will be my pleasure to be able to wish him every success during a visit to his country from 2 to 5 April.

It is high time for all those involved in Moldovan politics to begin looking to the future constructively. I am convinced that all the political parties will show responsibility by accepting the democratic legitimacy of the country’s institutions and hence the legitimacy of a President elected in accordance with its constitutional requirements. It is now crucial for all the political parties to continue to work within the existing legal framework and contribute to a dialogue on the revision of the Constitution, as the new texts should be the result of a broad consensus,” concluded the PACE President.

Jean-Claude Mignon will make an official visit to the Republic of Moldova from 2 to 5 April 2012 to meet the country’s highest authorities and representatives of the political parties. During this time, Mr Mignon will also visit the Transnistrian region.
