Three workshops on Roma inclusion at Strasbourg Summit of Mayors

30.08.2011 - The Summit of Mayors on Roma, organised by the Council of Europe Congress in cooperation with different partners* in Strasbourg on 22 September 2011, will discuss ways to remove obstacles to Roma inclusion. Three thematic workshops will adress specific problems:

The dignity through education:

Participants will examine how to improve Roma access to good quality education, which is the crucial long-term need for Roma inclusion and should be considered a priority by local and regional authorities in developing and implementing local strategies.

Fighting prejudice and managing diversity:

Participants will exchange views on the civic rights and responsibilities of both the Roma and non-Roma population. In order to fight stereotypes, stigmatisation and to promote diversity, action open to municipalities facing racism and hatred will be discussed.

Equal access to housing, health care and employment:

Discussions will focus on how to facilitate equal access to public services for Roma without creating further hostility and accusations of unfair, preferential treatment.

*The Summit of Mayors on Roma is being organised in co-operation with the Special Representative of the Council of Europe Secretary General for Roma issues, Jeroen Schokkenbroek, and in partnership with the City of Strasbourg and the Strasbourg Club municipal network with the contribution of France and the European Commission.
