Forum for the Future of Democracy – 19 to 21 October 2010, Yerevan (Armenia)

Ian Micallef welcomes Armenia’s willingness to strengthen its cooperation with the Congress.

18.10.2010, Erevan (Armenia) - On the eve of the Council of Europe Forum for the Future of Democracy, Ian Micallef, President a.i. of the Congress, and Francis Lec, Congress member and Vice-President of the Conseil Général of the Somme département (France), met with Armen Gevorgyan, Armenian vice Prime Minister and Minister for Terrotorial Administration.

During their meeting, the Minister underlined the importance of the close partnership with the Congress and recognized the importance, for the democratic development of his country, of the Congress’ observation of elections, especially the recent Yerevan mayoral elections. He set out the main features of the reform of local self-government that his government is currently preparing.

The acting Congress president affirmed the close cooperation between the Congress and the Armenian authorities, a cooperation which he was confident would deepen in the coming years. He welcomed the forthcoming Armenian territorial reforms announced by Mr Gevorgyan.
