Death of Georges Pierret

“The Congress has learnt with deep sadness of the death of Georges Pierret, who was a great defender of regionalism in Europe, in particular in Brittany (France),” said Secretary General of the Congress, Andreas Kiefer, in his letter of condolences on 16 August.

Georges Pierret held the positions of Secretary General of the Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions (CPMR) from 1973 until 1995 and was the first Secretary General of the Assembly of European Regions (AER) from 1985 until 1992, both European regional associations which have observer status with the Congress.

“I had the privilege of knowing Georges Pierret personally and I highly appreciate his efforts as a pioneer of the regional cause in France and in Europe. I would like to pay tribute to his devotion to regional democracy and his contribution to making territorial communities genuine players in the European process,” said the Congress Secretary General.
